WOOD RIVER, IL – East Alton-Wood River High School (EAWR) is proud to unveil the nearly completed transformation of the entrance and lobby of its historic Memorial Gymnasium — a facility that has been the heart of Oilers athletics and community gatherings since 1949.
Known for its distinctive two-deck design and stage-end layout, Memorial Gym has hosted generations of student-athletes, coaches, and fans. While the gym floor itself has remained the stage for countless victories and memories, the lobby and entry areas had gone largely unchanged — until now.
The transformation is now 98% complete, with the final touches expected to be in place before August 21, 2025. Remaining work includes installing lighting, cabinetry, and countertops in the new concession stand; switching out vestibule emergency lighting for more decorative fixtures; replacing the exterior overhang lights; adding color-changing wall packs for game nights; and placing the new Oilers logo on the lobby floor once its design is finalized.
Key Enhancements
Restored Entryway & Central Ticket Booth – The original ticket booth has been revitalized, returning a nostalgic tradition for fans on game day.
New Concession Area – A dedicated concessions space has been added for improved service and better crowd flow.
Interactive History Walls – Two 65-inch touchscreen displays, powered by RocketAlumniSolutions.com, offer a fully interactive look at Oilers athletic history, including hall of fame inductees, championship teams, and iconic moments.
Modern Visual Environment – The space now features new ceilings, floors, illuminated wall graphics, and signage that blend EAWR’s historic identity with a bold, modern presentation.
Before and after photos reveal the dramatic change — replacing the aging, utilitarian entry with a vibrant, high-impact space that reflects both the tradition and the energy of EAWR athletics. The upgraded lobby now serves as a showcase for school pride and a welcoming point for students, alumni, and community members alike.
The public will get its first opportunity to experience the new space on August 21, 2025, during the Maroon and Gold Volleyball Game in Memorial Gym.
