Wood River, IL — Construction is officially underway on a new regulation-size soccer and multi-use youth field at East Alton-Wood River High School. The project represents a major investment in student opportunity, community access, and regional collaboration across the tri-district area.
Located on the site of the former baseball diamond, the field has already been fully graded, with 95% of its irrigation system installed. Final top dressing and Bluemuda sprigging — the same high-performance turf used on EAWR’s varsity football field — will begin in the coming weeks.
The new facility will serve as the permanent home for:
EAWR’s boys’ and girls’ soccer programs
Junior Football League (JFL)
A potential middle school soccer program
Elementary and junior high field days
Community-wide events and youth recreation
While the project was originally envisioned as a shared public-private initiative, outside support that was anticipated did not come to fruition. Rather than let the opportunity pass, EAWR moved forward — with backing from committed local partners — to bring the vision to life for the benefit of students and families. Additional discussions with local districts and stakeholders remain ongoing, and the support received to date underscores a shared commitment to improving youth access and athletic opportunity across the region.
Field readiness is expected during the fall of 2025, delivering a first-class venue to serve students and the broader community for years to come.
In addition to the new soccer facility, the District is planning a series of upgrades to its softball complex, including:
The installation of a permanent outfield fence, long overdue and designed to enhance both safety and game play
A concrete spectator area behind the new backstop system for improved viewing and accessibility
Exploration of infield improvements to further enhance the quality of the playing surface
These enhancements reflect EAWR’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality, equitable athletic facilities that benefit student-athletes and community members alike.
