Serving on the Board

The Board is responsible for the governance of the District. Its powers and duties include the broad authority to adopt and enforce all necessary policies for the management and governance of East Alton - Wood River Community High School.

The Board of Education is composed of seven citizens elected to serve overlapping terms of four years each. At the end of a term, a Board member wishing to continue service must be re-elected for an additional four-year term. There is no limit to the number of terms to which a member may be elected.

Election of school board members takes place on the 1st Tuesday in April in an odd-numbered year. The next Board election will be held in April of 2019.


Board Meetings—How They Work

The Board of Education meets regularly on the 1st and 2nd Tuesdays of the month in the Conference Room at EAWR. The 1st Regular Tuesday Meeting is generally a discussion and review meeting, although some action items are scheduled as needed. Most school board business and action items are reserved for the 2nd Tuesday meeting, which is the Board’s Regular Meeting. All meetings are called to order at 6:00 PM.

At its Reorganization Meeting of May 2, 2017, the East Alton - Wood River Community High School District #14 Board of Education established the following dates and times for its monthly Board meetings. Its meetings will be held in Board Conference Room of the Main Building, 777 N. Wood River Ave., Wood River, IL 62095, at 6:00 p.m.

Board meeting agendas are posted—by law—at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting. These agendas are posted at the Superintendent’s Office and are also available here. Persons desiring to have their concern or issue placed as an agenda item may call the Superintendent to request such placement. 

Opportunities to address the Board are also given at each meeting during the Public Comments section of the agenda. This item is always scheduled towards the beginning of the meeting. 

Individuals who appear before the Board to express comments or ask questions are expected to follow these guidelines:

·       Address the Board only at the appropriate time as indicated on the Agenda and when recognized by the President.

·       Identify him/herself and be brief. Please keep comments limited to no more that 2 minutes. The President may allow more time        at his/her prerogative.

·       The President may deny a person the chance to speak who has previously addressed the Board on the same subject.

·       The President has the authority to determine procedural matters not otherwise defined by Board Policy.

 

Comments
